UTV's Seventhirty Show films for Sperrintrek Winter Walking Festival

On the 10th January the Sperrintrekkers had the absolute pleasure of hosting Malachi Cush and the crew of UTV’s Seven Thirty Show on a trek in the Sperrins.

The weather was miserable but the craic was great. We set Malachi the new year challenge of getting fit in the great outdoors by climbling to the top of Slieve Gallion!

With icy weather and poor visibility due to the mist the trek was tough but enjoyable. As always there was a great sense of achievement when we finally reached the summit at 528m high. Malachi confided that he loved the outdoors and had walked many times in the Mournes and indeed climbed Croagh Patrick but had never walked in the Sperrins.

Two experienced walk leaders, Sam and Ronnie from Mid-Ulster Walking Club were on hand to keep Malachi right in terms of the proper walking equipment needed for such a walk as well as point out the sights along the way.
We look forward to welcoming Malachi back to the first Winter Warmer Walking Festival on the 29th & 30th January were we will be climbing Slieve Gallion once again among many other Sperrin peaks. Why not join us!

The feature will be shown on UTV tonight at 7.30pm!

Altnaheglish Circuit (Guided Walk)
Distance: 9 miles approx
Level: Grade A/B Walks Available

Suitable for: Experienced Hill Walkers
Route Description:
This is a beautiful and very scenic walk. Covering a distance of approximately 9 miles this walk is mostly flat climbing to no more than 100m in places. The Walk starts from Altbritain Forest, crossing a narrow ford with walkers criss-crossing through the beautiful Banagher Forest eventually making their way up to Altnaheglish Reservoir. The walk then follows the Altnaheglish River all the way back through the forest to the finish point at Altbritain forest.

Walk 1 - Lough Fea Dander
Distance: 2.5 miles approx
Level: Easy
Departing between: 10am & 2.30pm Lough Fea*
Suitable for: Families and Casual Walkers
Complete Walk: 45 minutes approx
A flat circular route on a well established path at Lough Fea set amongst young conifers bounding a mountain reservoir. No need to book - just make a donation to the Stroke   Association on the day.

Walk 2 - Mobuy Wood Walk (Guided Walk)
Distance: 5 miles approx
Suitable for: Reasonably Fit Walkers
(No Wheelchair or Pushchair Access)

Level: Moderate
Time To Complete Walk: 2-3 hours approx
Leaving Lough Fea this walk climbs to 450 metres giving extensive views of farmland, forest and mountain on a clear day. The route is along the Western boundary fence of Mobuy Wood.

1. Family Walk
Location: Pleasure Grounds, Florence Court Gardens and Florence Court Forest
Registration: 1:30a.m. – 2:00p.m.
(Beginning at 2:00p.m.) at the Stable-Yard within Florence Court Estate
Distance: 2.4km
Approximate Time: 1.5 hours
Route:

This walk is suitable for most walkers and ideal for those with young children. The walk will proceed at a gentle pace with regular stops. All children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The walk will be lead by Fermanagh District Council's Biodiversity Officer and the National Trust's Conservation Warden. The focus of the walk will be the variety of habitats that can be seen along the walk as well as the species that utilise them. This particular walk celebrates the native Red Squirrel as the walk falls within National Red Squirrel Week. The walk will lead away from the Stableyard and out past the car park following a gravelled track. The walk will take you along grazed pastures with scattered parkland trees, bordered by native woodland. Looping back, we will enter a mixed woodland of hazel, beach and oak where we may see signs of Red

2. Intermediate Walk
Location: Brookfield/Tullyhona (Florence Court Forest).
Registration: 9:30a.m – 10:00a.m
(Beginning at 10:15a.m.) at the old Stable-Yard within Florence Court Estate.
Distance: 7.0/8.0km
Approximate time: 4.5 hours
Route:

This walk is particularly suitable for persons of moderate level of fitness and for families who have children aged 8 years old plus. All terrain is moderate and there are pulls on reasonable tracks. This walk begins at Florence Court House and travels through the townland of Finlane on forest land towards Cobh Rock. The route then traverses across limestone where fossilised corral can be viewed skirting along the southern fringe of Florence Court Forest below the foothills of Trien Mountain following the route of the old Ulster Way. The route then rejoins track through Deerpark and heads north east back towards Deerpark Cottage on the route back towards Florence Court. The walk finishes back in the stable-yard of Florence Court House.

3. Advanced Walk
Location: Cuilcagh Way *
(Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark)
Registration: 9:00a.m – 9:30a.m (Beginning at 10:00a.m.) at the old Cattle Yard within Florence Court Estate.
Distance: 11/12km
Approximate time: 6.5 hours
Route:

This walk is particularly suitable for the fitter walker with experience of steep terrain and long distances. This walk is not suitable for persons under 12 years old. A packed lunch and drinks are essential.
The walk will begin in the Gortalughany Car Park and transport will be provided to this location from the National Trust Car Park in Florence Court Estate. The route progresses for 1.5km along a path which traverses across a variety of rare habitat types including limestone pavement and blanket bog. At the end of the trackway the walk will continue across upland blanket bog which may at times feel as though you are walking on water! After 6km the steep ascent to the summit plateau begins where panoramic views of the surrounding countryside are spectacular. On the summit plateau (665metres) there is the large stone cairn where magnificent 360° sweeping views can be seen. On a clear day views can encompass counties Tyrone, Donegal, Cavan, Leitrim, Sligo and Roscommon. If the weather is particularly favourable you might even catch a glimpse of the Nephin Beg Mountain range in County Mayo before we begin the descent back towards the Gortalughany Car Park.

Sunday 9th October
1. Family Walk
Location: Crocknagrally Forest
Registration: 1:30pm-2pm at Cooneen/Coonian Community Hall
(Beginning at 2:15p.m.) at the entrance to Crocknagrally Forest
Distance: 1.5km
Approximate Time: 1.0 hours
Route:

This walk is suitable for most walkers and ideal for those with young children. The walk will proceed at a gentle pace with regular stops. All children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The walk will be lead by Fermanagh District Council's Biodiversity Officer and the focus of the walk will be the forest's nature conservation value for our native and endangered species, the Red Squirrel. The walk will largely follow a Forest Service track cutting through a conifer plantation of Sitka Spruce, Norway Spruce and Lodgepole Pine. We will follow the track downhill, crossing the Colbrooke, to where the track branches off. From here, we will enter the forest briefly to observe a Red Squirrel drey and its feeding activity of discarded pine cones and hazel nuts. We will need to double-back to make our return to the forest entrance, all the time looking out for an actual sighting of the shy Red Squirrel.

2. Intermediate Walk
Location: Crockacleven/Crocknagrally Forests (Slieve Beagh Mountain South West)
Registration: 9:30a.m. – 10:00a.m.
(Beginning at 10:15a.m.) at Cooneen/Coonian Community Hall.
Distance: 10.0km
Approximate Time: 4.0 hours
Route:
This walk is particularly suitable for persons of moderate level of fitness and for families who have children aged 8 years old plus. All terrain is moderate with gentle pulls on reasonable slopes. A packed lunch and drinks are essential.
The walk begins at Coonian/Cooneen Community Hall and traverses along a minor public road for around 2km before turning into Crocknagrally Forest. This forest is largely a conifer plantation of Sitka Spruce, Norway Spruce and Lodgepole Pine. The walk crosses the Colebrooke River and continues along forest track climbing towards Crockacleaven taking in some fine views of the surrounding areas. The walk passes by Crockacleaven Lough before descending through Mullanahaltore and then leaving the track to walk through the forest towards Tattenabuddagh before emerging on the public road. The walk then makes the 2km journey back to the Community Hall, the finishing point of the walk.

3. Advanced Walk
Location: Crocknagrally Forest/Glennoo Mountain (Slieve Beagh Mountain South West)
Registration: 9:00a.m. – 9:30a.m.
(Beginning at 9:45a.m.) at Cooneen/Coonian Community Hall.
Distance: 13/14km
Approximate Time: 5.5 hours
Route:

This walk is particularly suitable for the fitter walker with experience of hills, high levels and long distances. This walk is not suitable for persons under 12 years old. A packed lunch and drinks are essential. Transport will be provided to the start point of the walk. Walkers will be transported by bus from Cooneen/Coonian Community Hall to the drop off point at entrance to forest track leading to Glennoo Mountain. The route traverses 2km along forest track climbing towards Glennoo Mountain eventually leaving forest plantation to give wide views across blanket bog. On a clear day the town of Fivemiletown can be seen in the distance. The route then crosses a bridge passing a disused fish hatchery before starting the assent towards Lough Natroy. Look out for Hen Harriers and Red Grouse as you take in magnificent views of Sliabh Beagh area. This mountain and the surrounding area is a wildlife haven containing many rare and notable species. Once past Lough Natroy the route then descends across blanket bog towards Mullaghfad Forest taking in the old Ulster Way route past Brown Hill and back towards Alderwood. The walk traverses back along forest track before emerging on public road for a very short distance before entering Crockacleaven Forest. From here the walk traverses along forest track towards Crocknagrally Forest taking in some wondering views of the surrounding area. The walk leaves forest track for a short distance across the forest floor until it joins an agricultural lane leading towards the public road at Tattenabuddagh. The walk then progresses along a minor public road for around 2km making the journey back to the Community Hall, the finishing point for the day.

Monday 10th October
Inclusive Walk
Location: Castle Coole, Enniskillen
Registration: 10:00 – 10:30a.m.
(Beginning at 11:00a.m) at the first car park in
Castle Coole Estate
Distance: 2.0km
Approximate Time: 1 hour
Route:

This walk is dedicated to and particularly suitable for people with disabilities and is accessible for wheelchair users. However, wheelchair users will need assistance along lengths of the route. The walk will proceed at a gentle pace with regular stops and all children under-18 must be accompanied by an adult. Groups of individuals from organisations should be accompanied by a carer/tutor. This walk will take place within the grounds of Castle Coole which is owned and managed by the National Trust. The route begins at the car park closest to the main entrance and follows the route of the tarmac avenue through spectacular expanses of parkland towards the neo-classical Georgian building that is Castle Coole itself. There will also be an option for walkers to explore the newly opened lakeshore walk which encapsulates and offers spectacular panoramic views of Lough Coole and the surrounding countryside. Castle Coole Estate is an area rich in both historical and natural features making it an ideal place for walking.

Saturday 29th January
Slieve Gallion Circuit
Start: Iniscairn Forest
Grade: A/B
Distance: A Walk (9 miles) B Walk (4 miles)
Walking Time: A Walk (4 hours) B Walk (3 hours)

Starting from Iniscarn Forest entrance on the Iniscarn Road walkers will follow the forest track up to its end, switching to a rougher track which will meander up and across the hillside to reach Slieve Gallion’s Telecommunicatons mast and Cairn. From the Cairn walkers will drop west into the Whitewater valley leading to a another track which joins a road close to Whitewater Bridge. A short distance beyond the bridge the road which wends its way up Glenrudda Mountain to Slieve Gallion’s Trig point. Views of the Lough Neagh basin with the Belfast & Antrim Hills, Slemish, The Mournes and Cooleys can all be seen to the east on a clear day. To the west the main Sperrins range beckons. From the Trig point walkers will follow the obvious route to join the service road leading back to the mast. From here the return route will follow that taken on outward leg earlier in the day

Sunday 30th January
Glengomna Traverse
Start: Glenelley Road (Grid Ref: IH706 943 - 2km from Glengomna Bridge)
Grade: A
Distance: 7.5 miles
Walking Time: 4.5 hours

The walk starts on the Glenelley Road (aprox 2km from Glengomna Bridge), there is a short walk to a track leading onto open mountain for a relatively easy climb up and away from Glengomna Water onto Mullaghsallagh. A 2km ridge walk follows over to the top of Oughtmore mountain. The views into the Sperrins and over the Lough Neagh basin from the high points on the walk are spectacular. Walkers will turn East for another relatively easy climb up to a fenceline on the col dividing Oughtmore from Spelhoagh . The fence will be followed southeast to Craigbane. From here there is a drop into a valley before a fairly steep climb up to the summit of Crockbrack. Walkers will access a ‘green road’ which leads to a point close to the summit of Crockmore. The route is all downhill from here following a track which meanders down the hillside to join the Drumderg Road which in turn joins the main Moneyneany Road a few metres from the end point at Mulligans Pub.

Crockmore / Crockbrack
Level: Grade A/B Walks available
Distance: Grade A : 10 miles / Grade B : 8 Miles

From the quite village of Moneyneany each group will have an upward road walk, grading into mountain tracks as we make our way West to summit both Crockmore and Crockbrack mountains. These are two of the most splendid view points the Sperrins can offer. Off track walking leads us unto Craigbane were the B group will take a downward mountain track, followed by a short road walk back to Moneyneany. The A group will continue to climb both Spelhoagh and Oughtmore mountains before finishing at the foot of Albritain Forest. Two super walks with fantastic scenery.

Sunday 29th January
Glenshane Circuit
Level: Grade A Walk
Distance: Grade A : 9 miles / Highest Point : 479m
Departing: 9am from Burnavon Cookstown (Bus Transport Provided)
Suitable for: Experienced Hill Walkers

Another fantastic walk awaits for our Sunday Sperrintrekker. Starting high in the Eastern Sperrins you find yourself lost in no time in the splendour of our first summit of the day, Collnasillagh mountain. Following the fence-line East its unto Bohilbreaga mountain, the highest point of today's walk. Following the fence line for a short time we will then change direction to head North. There will be a short stop towards Glenshane mountain to view Glendoo burn with its wonderful waterfall. Its then unto Corick mountain, our last mountain of the day. From here the walk will continue to follow the track down through Glenshane Forest to finish at Shaskin Bridge.

A huge heather clad bulk of mountain overlooking the South Armagh countryside and encircled by a geologically unique ring of hills known as a Ring Dyke.

Saturday 10th September
Grade I Mournes:
Approx 12km Height Gain: 1060m
Route: Happy Valley – Meelmore – Slieve Bernagh – Slievenaglogh – Slieve Carrag – Slieve Commedagh – Shan Slieve – Donard Park

This is a strenuous Grade I Walk in the high Mournes with beautiful views over all the peaks and into Newcastle and Dundrum Bay.

Grade II Mournes:
Approx 12km Height Gain: 480m
Route: Happy Valley – Col at Meelmore/Meelbeg – Hare’s Gap – Brandy Pad – Col at Donard/ Commedagh – Slieve Commedagh – Shan Slieve – Donard Park

A most enjoyable walk on the western side of the Mournes with tracking into the centre of the Mournes and finishing with spectacular views where the Mournes sweep down to the sea..

Grade II Cooleys:

Approx 12km Height Gain: 500m

Route: Ravensdale Forest – Ben Rock – Clermont Cairn – Cairnawaddy – The Castle – Lumpers Pub.

A Beautiful introduction to the heathery mountains of this area rich in the folklore of Cuchulainn who walked these hills 2000 years ago.

Grade III
Gap of the North History Walk – 5 km

The walk starts at Faughart Graveyard, near site of battle in 1318 in which Edward Bruce was killed. Walk continues past St Brigid’s Shrine through the Gap of the North where O’Neill fought Mountjoy in 1600, and on to Moyra Castle and the Kilnasaggart Stone. Walk ends near Jonesborough at the Carrickdale Hotel

Grade I Mournes:

Approx 14km Height Gain: 950m

Route: Attical – Slivemageogh – Pigeon – Slievemoughanmore – Eagle – Shanlieve – Pierces Castle – Tornamrock – Rocky – Leitrim Lodge.

This is a strenuous grade 1 walk sarting in the East of the Mournes and encompassing some of the better ridge walks in the Mournes.

Grade II Mournes:
Approx 9km Height Gain: 620m

Route: Attical – Eagle – Shanlieve – Pierces Castle – Tornamrock – Leitrim Lodge.

Commencing Eastern side of the Mournes, this walk takes us over one of the most prominent mountains in the Mournes - Eagle mountain and finishes inm the tranquil settings of Leitrim Lodge

Grade II Cooleys:

Approx 12km Height Gain: 589m

Route: Carlingford > Forest Car Park > Eagle Rock > Slieve Foye > Barnavave > Ruined Village>Carlingford

A craggy mountain dominating the Carlingford landscape with a famous ridge stretching 2 kilometres from the head at 589m to the toe at 384m.

Grade III Smuggler’s Walk (South Armagh Border)

Approx 4 km, Height gain: 200 m

The walk starts from Cornamucklagh House (Davey’s Pub). We visit the site of a monastery in the Ferry Wood wiped out by the Vikings in 845, then follow the border stream up through Fathom Wood to Larry Tam’s Loanan where a poet and highwayman came to a bad end. Back by secret lanes and pathways to Cornamucklagh House.
