A WEEEND OF WALKS IN MONMOUTHSHIRE

1. Monmouth to Kings Wood & Dingestow
On this 10.5 mile (17km) walk you'll start at Monmouth and follow Offa’s Dyke Path up into Kings Wood before descending to the River Trothy and following it to Dingestow village. You'll return to Monmouth past the historic Treowen House and enjoy fantastic views over Monmouth and the surrounding area.

2. Tintern & Angidy Valley
Exploring the village and the preserved industrial remains of the once chaotic-now idyllic Angidy Valley. More details to follow.

3. Usk to Chainbridge
On this 10.5 mile (17km) walk we'll be following the Usk Valley Walk from Usk to Chainbridge. We'll then climb to reach the historic church at Bettws Newydd and continue upwards before returning to Usk via fields and woodland, passing the Castle along the way.

4. Llanover to the Goose & Cuckoo
On this 7.5mile (12km) walk we'll visit Llanover Church and pass through Llanover Estate before climbing to reach the Goose and Cuckoo pub. We'll return via fields, canal and lanes with great views over Abergavenny and the Skirrid Mountain.

5a. Both sides of the Monnow
A 6.5 mile (10km) walk in the picturesque Monnow Valley. We'll follow the English side of the valley, passing the ancient church at Llanrothal to reach Tregate Bridge. We'll return by following part of the Monnow Valley Walk to enjoy outstanding views over Skenfrith Village and the Monnow Valley.

5b. Three Castles and Monnow Valley
A 4-mile (6.5km) walk following part of the Three Castles Walk through lanes and open fields, returning via part of the Monnow Valley Walk with superb views of the Monnow Valley and the village of Skenfrith.

6. Palaces, Churches and Mills
A 7.5-mile (12km) walk in the south of the county. Starting from Mathern village, with its ancient well and church, the walk will take you through parkland and fields with great views across the River Severn, through the village of Pwllmeyric to visit Great Barnet Wood. The walk continues on to the hamlet of Mounton, with its disused paper mills, before returning to Mathern via St. Pierre and the Bishops Palaces.

7. Ancient Hill Fort and Fantastic Views
A 5-mile (8km) walk near Llandenny, through undulating countryside and country lanes, passing an ancient hill fort and enjoying fantastic views across to Abergavenny and the Black Mountains.

8. Up and Over the Sugarloaf
A 10-mile ( km) walk following Y Rholben to reach the top of the Sugar Loaf Mountain with superb views across Abergavenny and the Black Mountains. You'll continue down to the hamlet of Bettws before climbing Bryn Arw to enjoy more spectacular views. The route will then pass through Pantygelli before returning to Abergavenny via the lower slopes of the Sugar Loaf.

9. The Bridges of Monmouth
A 9-mile (15km) walk taking in many of the bridges, big and small, in the Monmouth area. The walk follows part of Offa’s Dyke Path to the top of the Kymin Hill, with superb views across Monmouth town and the surrounding area. You'll continue along Offa’s Dyke to Redbrook before crossing the old railway bridge over the River Wye to reach the Boat Inn. You'll then walk up to Penallt with its ancient church and enjoy great views over the town on your return to Monmouth.

10. The Wonders of Wentwood
On this 7-mile (11.25km) walk you'll ascend Grey Hill with its ancient standing stones to enjoy outstanding views across the River Severn and south Monmouthshire. You'll continue down into the secluded Cwm Valley, before ascending again to follow tracks and bridleways through Wentwood Forest.

11a. Castle, River and Ancient Hill Fort
A 6-mile (9.5km) walk passing Clytha Castle, an Iron Age hill fort, a secluded church and a section of the Usk Valley Walk.

11b. Around the Clytha Estate
A 2.5-mile (4km) walk around the Clytha Estate passing Clytha House and the site of an ancient chapel.

12. Old Pub, Offa’s Dyke and Old Court
This 7-mile (11km) starts from the village of Llanvihangel Crucorney, home of the ancient Skirrid Mountain Inn, and follows the Honddu River to Pandy, before walking a section of Offa’s Dyke Path to Llangattock Lingoed. You'll return through fields and lanes, passing the edge of the Skirrid Mountain and Llanfihangel Court.
