</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The festival, which will be held from Friday to Sunday, May 18 to 20, offers 17 guided walks for all abilities and will have a whole host of knowledgeable guides on hand.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">This year the festival will be celebrating Katharine Parr’s 500th anniversary with an insight into Tudor life in and around Sudeley Castle, where she is buried.</div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirSwRO-EmcTqCqeff_QhlxqYIrOSANyMVpUxXyNBzvCXQ4EufHsmyLzcpOOOxhAmShxxcviovACthXOcflmC0TFu03pGCfmcfiU76OLTiNplCBlDjgJWTG6gMyEodgEq8STVtm8K9UH-c/s1600/fhdx.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirSwRO-EmcTqCqeff_QhlxqYIrOSANyMVpUxXyNBzvCXQ4EufHsmyLzcpOOOxhAmShxxcviovACthXOcflmC0TFu03pGCfmcfiU76OLTiNplCBlDjgJWTG6gMyEodgEq8STVtm8K9UH-c/s400/fhdx.jpg" width="400" /></a> </div><br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Secretary Robert Talbot said: “This year bookings are beyond our expectations. With 10 weeks to go we already have some walks full or nearly full. The committee are now exploring increasing the number of walks to meet the demand.”</div><br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;">A survey of participants at last year’s Angus Glens Walking Festival showed that 86 per cent would be interested in a similar event in the autumn.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Eric Lowson, director of infrastructure services, said: «It is proposed that a new two day outdoors festival be developed which will offer, not only walking as an activity, but also taster sessions of other activities such as mountain biking, canoeing or horse riding. This will be branded as an extension of the Angus Glens Walking Festival allowing this new activity to capitalise on the success of the current walking festival, targeting those who already visit Angus in spring to return again in the autumn» </div><div style="text-align: justify;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwkwxRKayUNa3QbTy7xbGQMP7Qahk_g2eGhz5K58ScRl1Ul0nFzDHvDRFC08O5zMLbiE6SHQaB5CWaGGjFV893POOiVoGjs8bjkAeIT4qStr5i1elNKRVIlVQGJz6xPtqd0fvuS5R3Kd4/s1600/5734.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwkwxRKayUNa3QbTy7xbGQMP7Qahk_g2eGhz5K58ScRl1Ul0nFzDHvDRFC08O5zMLbiE6SHQaB5CWaGGjFV893POOiVoGjs8bjkAeIT4qStr5i1elNKRVIlVQGJz6xPtqd0fvuS5R3Kd4/s200/5734.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">He continued: “It is proposed that the new festival, Angus Autumn Adventures, will take place on September 1 and 2, working with the Outdoor Angus Industry Group and other activity providers in Angus. This has the aim of attracting visitors to the area at a traditionally quieter time of year and will showcase our year-round tourism products.»</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Meanwhile, the local authority is proposing to underwrite the spring festival up to a maximum of £4,500 for 2012.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The festival has grown each year since it was introduced in 2003.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Mr Lowson said: «In 2011, the Festival increased the number of available walks from 24 to 28 to encourage people to participate in more walks, to stay longer in the area and to experience the great outdoors in Angus. 2011 was the first year the festival offered ‘All Abilities’ graded walks on each day allowing inexperienced walkers to participate, thus encouraging people to take up walking as a hobby. During the festival, three evening events are organised with the introduction of two new events; a quiz night and a Taste of Angus evening while keeping the traditional Ceilidh on Saturday night.»<b> </b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">«These events are aimed at encouraging people to stay longer in Angus, experience local food and drink and to offer a unique entertainment programme to attract visitors to Angus. In 2009, online booking was introduced to bring in-house the booking and purchasing procedure as this had traditionally been carried out by VisitScotland. In 2010, online purchasing was established so customers can book and pay for their walks and evening events in an efficient and customer friendly manner.»</div><br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The perfect way to explore these wonderful islands and find out more about their rich history, diversity and wealth of flora and fauna, the festival has retained some of its favourite walks and added new ones, along with a range of evening entertainment.</div><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">Throughout the week there are dozens of organised walks ranging from the easygoing to the strenuous taking in various aspects of the islands' individual character. Alongside the walks, there are talks, museum open evenings, cookery demos and live music.</div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjInfrtmDUAhhZxx2mHVljVaUew72fvJ94owBcVE53LWXe2wJmVVsHQkllc7TNGBglI6gUqdEpiDM2ptcqaBIEhgbrvO46WSehE_8ftPA6uUNuMOPlzK5zbAezjbcxG7M0Q-u2eQ7DrA1Q/s1600/dgd.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjInfrtmDUAhhZxx2mHVljVaUew72fvJ94owBcVE53LWXe2wJmVVsHQkllc7TNGBglI6gUqdEpiDM2ptcqaBIEhgbrvO46WSehE_8ftPA6uUNuMOPlzK5zbAezjbcxG7M0Q-u2eQ7DrA1Q/s400/dgd.jpg" width="400" /></a> </div><br />
Walks cover a range of themes, lengths and difficulty from the less strenuous which introduce visitors to the formation and structure of the landscape of the islands to a walk across the sand flats between Tresco, Samson and Bryher giving you a chance to investigate the marine life that the low tide reveals.<br />
<br />
You can stroll across Chapel Down with its prehistoric and mediaeval remains, observe the sky at night free from light and industrial pollution on a stargazing evening and improve your photo-taking skills on an organised photo shoot capturing the islands' natural beauty.<br />
<br />
As in 2011 the 2012 festival will also offer visitors a range of roam-alone routes recommended by leading walkers.<br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;">A number of walking routes have been organised for walkers attending the two-day festival and, according to festival director Colm Bambury, there is a route available to suit every level.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">It will help, of course, if the weather is kind to the event, but the hardy walkers will head for the hills in any event.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">This year's festival will help raise funds for The Mark Pollack Trust, with walkers being invited to donate to the fund. Colm explained why he chose the trust as this year's festival charity.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">«Mark Pollock, a native of County Down, became blind at the age of 22 and for over a decade afterwards he began a new journey as an adventure athlete competing in the harshest of environments possible,» he said.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">«He became the first blind man to walk to the South Pole; he has climbed Mount Everest; he ran six marathons in one week in the Gobi desert; competed in the frozen Arctic Ocean and won two Commonwealth medals in rowing-plus.»</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">In July 2010 Mark fell from a second story window in London and suffered multiple injuries that left him paralysed from the waist down.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">He is now trying to regain the use of his legs using «a bionic suit of sorts. Mark's story is truly inspiring and the 2012 Dingle Walking Festival is supporting his efforts all the way» said Colm.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Dingle Walking Festival takes place this weekend on February 18 and 19.</div><br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;">To celebrate the festival’s 14th year, people are being invited to test their willpower and courage by walking over a 20 foot stretch of hot coals or – new for this year – a path of broken glass created from thousands of smashed wine bottles.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The sponsored glass and fire walks will raise money for Beaulieu House in Newport, a respite centre providing support for children with severe learning disabilities or health issues. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Training for both walks is based on proven motivational and psychological methods. It does not involve any elements of hypnosis, spiritual training, chanting or brainwashing, however organisers say it is tremendous fun. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

It promises to be a fun evening for spectators as well as those taking part, as live music will entertain the crowds while the walkers take part in the training sessions beforehand. We look forward to welcoming both residents and visitors to this year’s festival which features more than 242 walks over 16 days.»</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The club helped to train 14 walk leader volunteers as part of Natural England’s Walking for Health scheme, giving all participants the chance to earn a qualification and become members of organised walks taking place throughout the borough.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

<br />
There are 29 proposed walks (and the social evening) in all of varying grades of difficulty and interest, as well as a social eveing. All of the finalised walks and social events will be fully described on their website before February and also booking will be available for online.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqDsUIb2z5-GiuDRPhpxMuPMnI6tuj5FEezeaKukjUXfZnHlQrLGgv0GDk4JBcx7xDJzHJdmL_ZsLkCl9aa7awzkw2mtDy0dk2KuBtYs9cDk1TGVEBffJ8sKEo7UfzzUIo5dM-18FDZm0/s1600/sfa.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqDsUIb2z5-GiuDRPhpxMuPMnI6tuj5FEezeaKukjUXfZnHlQrLGgv0GDk4JBcx7xDJzHJdmL_ZsLkCl9aa7awzkw2mtDy0dk2KuBtYs9cDk1TGVEBffJ8sKEo7UfzzUIo5dM-18FDZm0/s400/sfa.jpg" width="265" /></a></div>Spring brings a renewed freshness to this area which is both wild and rugged as well as very beautiful, and the walks provide a great opportunity to see the best of this area in good company. The headline long walks this spring will be the Burns and Crags over the first weekend and the 3 day Hexham to Haltwhistle via Burn Tongues over the second weekend. There will be something of interest to everyone as Real Ale, Bird watching, Drumming, Singing, Conservation, Alpacas and much more have all been included in the programme.<br />
<br />
So now it is time to dust off your walking boots and prepare yourself for this brilliantly organised and well established walking festival and may be even the Haltwhistle Challenge<br />
<br />
The full programme of walks and events for the 2012 Haltwhistle Spring Walking Fesival is now all online. The cost for most of the walks remains at £6 but where they run over a series of days or where additional costs are incurred, such as transport or food (like an afternoon tea) then prices are higher. Birds, alpacas, beer, singing and drumming are just some of the themes available in the programme for this spring.</div><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">Bookings for the walks can also be made through the website so people can plan their Walking Festival visit in the comfort of their own homes.</div><br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Celebrating its 10th year, the four-day walking festival offers a packed programme of 28 walks as well as three evenings of top food, music and entertainment.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The festival runs from Thursday, May 31, to Sunday, June 3, and there is a wide choice of walks to suit walkers of all levels of fitness and ability. Places are limited so you are advised to book early.</div><div style="text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKcNP0-mcMGUbecvfXwqUOXqYX5VafuAcmc6J0LjUB0bYUSGCynu7ZAehzOFq4dvaMGfi9Cu2d4k60-qxA96vkGcDjFgUO_ulz5CeVmBtMu0GvJVJPfpec3PakkmhYlqcId3hXKpRsj3s/s1600/1010.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKcNP0-mcMGUbecvfXwqUOXqYX5VafuAcmc6J0LjUB0bYUSGCynu7ZAehzOFq4dvaMGfi9Cu2d4k60-qxA96vkGcDjFgUO_ulz5CeVmBtMu0GvJVJPfpec3PakkmhYlqcId3hXKpRsj3s/s400/1010.jpg" width="281" /></a> </div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Tom McGrath, chairman of the Festival, said: “I believe The Angus Glens Walking Festival has grown over the years because of the fantastic range of walks we offer. Some of our walks, such as Jock’s Road and Airlie Ridge are very popular and appear in the programme every year. However, we always like to introduce new walks. This year one of our new walks, Eagle Watch, gives you a chance to see breeding golden eagles as they search for prey for their young, an excellent opportunity to see these majestic birds in their natural environment.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwkwxRKayUNa3QbTy7xbGQMP7Qahk_g2eGhz5K58ScRl1Ul0nFzDHvDRFC08O5zMLbiE6SHQaB5CWaGGjFV893POOiVoGjs8bjkAeIT4qStr5i1elNKRVIlVQGJz6xPtqd0fvuS5R3Kd4/s1600/5734.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwkwxRKayUNa3QbTy7xbGQMP7Qahk_g2eGhz5K58ScRl1Ul0nFzDHvDRFC08O5zMLbiE6SHQaB5CWaGGjFV893POOiVoGjs8bjkAeIT4qStr5i1elNKRVIlVQGJz6xPtqd0fvuS5R3Kd4/s200/5734.jpg" width="200" /></a>The programme of evening events is also very popular. On the Thursday there is a talk on the wildlife of the Galapagos Islands by an Angus Countryside Ranger, followed by supper. <b> </b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Taste of Angus event returns on Friday, giving walkers the chance to sample the best in local food and entertainment. And on Saturday the ever-popular ceilidh supper gives participants the opportunity to dance the night away.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Rothbury Walking Festival has become a major attraction in the last few years. And with 450 slots available for 20 different walks during the week-long event, it is set to be the best yet.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Organised by Shepherds Walks, the festival, which runs from Saturday, June 23 to Saturday, June 30, has gone from strength to strength. For the first two years the festival received funding to run. But last year it was funded purely by itself, and will do the same again this year.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Jon Monks from Shepherds Walks said: «We have people from as far away as the Isle of Wight coming to Rothbury. We try to make it more of an event for people who come as part of a holiday. One year we had local poets in the Queen’s Head Hotel. We try to make it more creative every year. This year we have got bush tucker trails and bat walks and some very different things to do. We’ve also incorporated the Cragside Challenge, which is a 13-mile walk but its quite hard. What we do is quite unique as everything comes out of our own funds. We got 50 per cent of funding in the first year and 25 per cent in the second year. After that we made it stand on its own two feet. That was always the intention and it works.»</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxiYrENd3gDTlS7bgkDXgjsEZyt_zP54fKtsLV8dn_VRGm1V9mkeZkar8U3SWfpjznkppqNQVLXcF8M0nrSEEjjj2VVTvDPGCYQvQOLl9vjxNcX_vE_eYOAgE00lrcuCa6bV5dYgTSQp4/s1600/vxc.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxiYrENd3gDTlS7bgkDXgjsEZyt_zP54fKtsLV8dn_VRGm1V9mkeZkar8U3SWfpjznkppqNQVLXcF8M0nrSEEjjj2VVTvDPGCYQvQOLl9vjxNcX_vE_eYOAgE00lrcuCa6bV5dYgTSQp4/s400/vxc.jpg" width="400" /></a> </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">And the festival also gives the village economy a boost as it draws in visitors who stay at local bed and breakfasts and hotels.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">«We work with the accommodation providers as well,» Jon added. «The first year we did it, I was walking along the High Street on one of the walks and one of the local B&Bs grabbed me and said ‘thank you very much for working with us’ and that’s good. People stay in the local area, spend their money in the community and support local businesses.»</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The festival’s first mail drop, where those who have been before receive information about this year’s event, took place between Christmas and New Year and already around 80 places have been filled.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">For the first time Shepherds Walks will also be leafleting about the event outside the region.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

AN invite was issued to all avid outdoor enthusiasts to walk this way in the west this February as the 2012 Dingle Walking Festival was officially launched in Danno's Restaurant and Bar last Friday night.<br />
<br />
Festival director Colm Bambury unveiled this year's programme of events in the company of Fionán Ó Hogaín of Údarás na Gaeltachta, former All-ireland winning Kerry captain Dara Ó Cinnéide of RTE, local Councillor Seamus Cosaí Macgearailt and festival sponsor Tomás Garvey who helped launch this year's festival.<br />
<br />
The 2012 Dingle Walking Festival takes place this year on February 18 and 19, featuring three walks of varying abilities held over the two days to cater for all fitness levels.<br />
<br />
«Corca Dhuibhne is a walkers' dream with its unspoiled beauty and archaeological sites» Colm Bambury told The Kerryman this week. «The routes on this year's festival programme are varied and will include the Pilgrims Way which pre-dates Christian Ireland. We will also visit Mount Brandon and walkers will be able to converse in Irish as bilingual information will be provided by the guides.»<br />
<br />
Walkers attending the festival will enjoy walks taking in local areas of interest including Mount Eagle, the Dingle Way, Slea Head, a walk around Dingle town called 'the New Line', Cnoca'cairn, the Loch an Dúin Valley, Loch Chom Calláin and Conor Pass to mention a few.<br />
<br />
The walk on Cosán na Naomh begins in Ventry and will take in a number of archaeological sites such as Gallarus Oratory and Kilmalkedar Church and is the site of the recent discovery of a spiral motif of rock art – which according to Colm is the first type of rock art of its kind to be seen in Kerry.<br />
<br />
The walkers will also be able to register on the day during the festival at Danno's Restaurant and Bar.<br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Get Doncaster Walking festival is returning for 2012 and organisers say this year it is bigger than ever.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The festival will run for the whole of 2012 includes a variety of walks which vary in distance and difficulty to ensure a varied programme to get all residents on the move.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Organisers at Doncaster Council say walks will range from exploring Potteric Carr to a town centre heritage walk, and believe there is something for everyone.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xDbcSTwypK4/TwCjMpHA74I/AAAAAAAAK4Y/tKV-pT8eG-M/s1600/erteawg.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xDbcSTwypK4/TwCjMpHA74I/AAAAAAAAK4Y/tKV-pT8eG-M/s400/erteawg.jpg" width="195" /></a>They believe walking is a fantastic way to improve a person’s physical activity and can be a fun, sociable way to see the sites of Doncaster.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Experts say by taking a brisk walk for 30 minutes a day, you will help to reduce your risk of developing chronic health problems like coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other major diseases. <br />
<br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Coun Cynthia Ransome, the council’s cabinet member for communities, said: «Why not make it your New Year’s resolution to be more active - and start by taking part in some of our organised walks? Not only will the festival offer obvious health benefits, each walk will introduce people to the many beautiful places around the borough.»</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Residents interested in taking part can grab a leaflet detailing walks for the first half of 2012 from their local leisure centre, library, children centre or GPs surgery.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Each walk listed in the booklet sets out the date and time, the distance, a brief description of the walk as well as any special requirements and this year dogs are allowed on the majority of the walks and are identified from the symbol on the leaflet.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The first walk is the Bentley Walk at 10.30am on Sunday, January 8. It takes a 5.5 mile route starting at Bentley Pavilion.<br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Ramblers is Britain's walking charity, working to safeguard the footpaths, the countryside and other places we go walking, and to encourage more people to take up walking. With 119,000 members in England, Scotland and Wales, they've been working for walkers for 76 years.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">They work for a walking Britain, where walking is a popular choice for its people, both for relaxation and in daily life. The Ramblers want walking to be an enjoyable experience for all, whether in the countryside or in the city, on gentle paths or challenging hillsides and believe that walking contributes to health and well-being and supports a more sustainable way of life.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7xhP9AfKtb9XqYbJYlvW0mHTuh-Dpq8oy2UdaodJmRQuWPg3EpU0PHbvVdIzeMdxw3a8engmH2nMXubctyWfqJM_Dy9jUwl9jd8Qewur7_9GlpS2KG1vApa_qgwHZNJdaVPFmlc9YzUQ/s1600/img_ramblers_logo.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7xhP9AfKtb9XqYbJYlvW0mHTuh-Dpq8oy2UdaodJmRQuWPg3EpU0PHbvVdIzeMdxw3a8engmH2nMXubctyWfqJM_Dy9jUwl9jd8Qewur7_9GlpS2KG1vApa_qgwHZNJdaVPFmlc9YzUQ/s1600/img_ramblers_logo.jpg" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">New rights of access to the countryside are the results of a long-fought campaign by the Ramblers. They are also working hard to keep the footpath network clear and improve its attractions to walkers.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Working to secure new national parks, protect wild land, promote public transport and encourage environmentally friendly farming and sustainable development.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">For the first time ever, the Ramblers hugely popular Festival of Winter Walks starts on Christmas Eve; giving you 10 whole days of free, festive, fun-filled walking adventures.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Whether you fancy a short Boxing Day amble to spend some quality time with the family or a lengthy New Year's Day hike to kick start those New Year's resolutions - with over 800 walks taking place across the length and breadth of the country there’s sure to be a walk that's right for you.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Chairperson Clare Scutts, said: «The response from walkers was exceptional. With half-term, Rugby World Cup and not the kindest weather conditions we were not sure how visitors would respond. In the end 93 per cent of all tickets were sold - with ironically the most challenging walks being the best sellers.»</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3VJNTqMYasVv0NMUZXkM03XpxgF6fHUmoCVUTes1UGJHWQ8_W1b36ff4ZtuYaJ0y0vj1I9kEeplrqL8A9ZFZq34WLFqToFk3zvp2Bo5UXsEeaqF4lMgnBt3t7nezuixKuPiqLV7kclwU/s1600/dds.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="156" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3VJNTqMYasVv0NMUZXkM03XpxgF6fHUmoCVUTes1UGJHWQ8_W1b36ff4ZtuYaJ0y0vj1I9kEeplrqL8A9ZFZq34WLFqToFk3zvp2Bo5UXsEeaqF4lMgnBt3t7nezuixKuPiqLV7kclwU/s640/dds.jpg" width="640" /></a> </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The festival collaborated with many local groups - Usk and Abergavenny astronomical society, Shirenewton, Chepstow, Monmouth and Abergavenny historical societies and Usk conservation group to put together the programme.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">While lottery funding helped them on their way, private sponsors Trekitt and St Pierre gave the festival a huge boost, as well as a number of local pubs and restaurants who ensured that each event had its own sponsor.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Ms Scutts added: «The festival is in a strong position to go forward next year and we are confident that there is the demand to make a second event possible. We are much indebted to our walk leaders who often helped on several walks and without whom clearly the festival could not take place.»</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The walking festival AGM will be held at the Babington centre, Trellech on December 8 at 7.30pm. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;">JEJU ― It’s a rainy November day on Jeju Island and the leaves have turned yellow and red.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The top of Aloreum, on Olle trail route No.1, is difficult to make out. Fog drifts over it like mist at the base of a waterfall. One of Olle’s most famous spots, Aloreum is one of Jeju’s many oreums ― volcanic cones that look like small mountains or hills.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The spot is usually filled with visitors determined to enjoy its fabled panoramic view.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNsokdFFlE9zzZypZTqrDyScIUcjAYODZjoUSSHt2odWS-f7Fs0_PFts8WdHCXdLVfOoTiZFwIk2jnkh24_Wh8ghBQY0Cs70_NSksdqbYYjzA76Nl2bbU_UMWOcHKFfncSdIXalB8d8NY/s1600/131243999_11n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="273" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNsokdFFlE9zzZypZTqrDyScIUcjAYODZjoUSSHt2odWS-f7Fs0_PFts8WdHCXdLVfOoTiZFwIk2jnkh24_Wh8ghBQY0Cs70_NSksdqbYYjzA76Nl2bbU_UMWOcHKFfncSdIXalB8d8NY/s400/131243999_11n.jpg" width="400" /></a> </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">But this time, there is only haze and the smell of grass, with a rare sense of tranquility in a serene, almost sacred atmosphere. Around this spot, people are encouraged to be slow and act like a “gansedari,” which means a lazybones in Jeju dialect. You would miss out on a lot by walking too quickly.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Jeju Olle is 250 km of connecting paths that take hikers all along the south coast of the island. Suh Myung-sook, former editor of OhmyNews and founder and president of Jeju Olle Foundation thought of creating the trail routes on Jeju after making her own pilgrimage to Spain’s Camino de Santiago in 2006.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">She returned that year to Jeju, where she was born and raised, and set up a team to create trails by restoring old, hidden paths that are not accessible to cars. The paths lead across the island’s unique, volcanic landscape, with exquisite sea shores, oreum, and black stone walls made of Jeju’s signature basalt.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“I think walking is the most humane way of traveling,” Suh had said during an Olle trail event on Jeju the day before. “Being slow and old fashioned in this digital era is more like a quiet revolution.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTComo_CrU_WClwwaR4aZXPCHHCDYRWwQMpcYa2QNRSyGBDNE8VYeSIBW1ffTa7H1C0hIFu2JoqMxM_RPjF6O-XYHniK0gIyX7RLlyZsOgHDCDw4XdzcOlknbWM45XoijU705V6N-OKsI/s1600/gasd.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="268" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTComo_CrU_WClwwaR4aZXPCHHCDYRWwQMpcYa2QNRSyGBDNE8VYeSIBW1ffTa7H1C0hIFu2JoqMxM_RPjF6O-XYHniK0gIyX7RLlyZsOgHDCDw4XdzcOlknbWM45XoijU705V6N-OKsI/s400/gasd.jpg" width="400" /></a> </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"> As the fog gets heavier, the path becomes muddy and slippery with rain. But there is more than a slippery slope to slow me down. The heavy moisture enhances the scent of mud and tiny little flowers, causing me to stop and take in the air. As I inhale, I hear the beating of my heart, and the pulsing of my blood. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Many travel writers say this is the very charm of walking.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;">“You get to use all your senses,” celebrated travel writer Han Bi-ya, who calls Aloreum the “most beautiful scenery of the whole universe,” said in a speech on Jeju just the day before.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“You listen, you smell, and you discover. And most of all, you get to discover yourself.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">With the smell of the wet leaves and stones, I forget my initial goal. The hiking is no longer about getting to the top of the oreum, but about rambling as much as you please. It’s hard not to slow down and appreciate the surroundings, in spite of the rain, especially the pastel-colored wild flowers and the vast, all-season green fields complimented by autumn leaves.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirf4UYTNqwDJSpBkyJZgQFqpDaA8_TVD5til5LkYj09cBQm4c903bwCeW3SKq-KhMBbxKUVmDxZ8ZakUS2srmHipl6yG6QJS32IO9Kpava_8p4LxOmhuqEYGGiJ5yJqbHc81F8FjLMEOw/s1600/131243997_11n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a> </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">I finally reach the top, and I find my shoes have become completely covered with mud. The rain still pours down, and I look ridiculous in my tacky raincoat, but feel rather content, surrounded by the panoramic view of the island. Listening to the rhythmic rattle of rain and the howl of the wind, a warm sense of joy settles on my shoulders and spreads down to my toes. I am alone with the nature, a rare, fascinating moment for a city person.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirf4UYTNqwDJSpBkyJZgQFqpDaA8_TVD5til5LkYj09cBQm4c903bwCeW3SKq-KhMBbxKUVmDxZ8ZakUS2srmHipl6yG6QJS32IO9Kpava_8p4LxOmhuqEYGGiJ5yJqbHc81F8FjLMEOw/s1600/131243997_11n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a> </div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirf4UYTNqwDJSpBkyJZgQFqpDaA8_TVD5til5LkYj09cBQm4c903bwCeW3SKq-KhMBbxKUVmDxZ8ZakUS2srmHipl6yG6QJS32IO9Kpava_8p4LxOmhuqEYGGiJ5yJqbHc81F8FjLMEOw/s1600/131243997_11n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="277" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirf4UYTNqwDJSpBkyJZgQFqpDaA8_TVD5til5LkYj09cBQm4c903bwCeW3SKq-KhMBbxKUVmDxZ8ZakUS2srmHipl6yG6QJS32IO9Kpava_8p4LxOmhuqEYGGiJ5yJqbHc81F8FjLMEOw/s400/131243997_11n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">About six hours prior to the Aloreum visit, I took Jeju Olle route no. 6, which starts at Jeju’s Soesokkak estuary. It is the opening day of 2011 Jeju Olle Walking Festival.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirf4UYTNqwDJSpBkyJZgQFqpDaA8_TVD5til5LkYj09cBQm4c903bwCeW3SKq-KhMBbxKUVmDxZ8ZakUS2srmHipl6yG6QJS32IO9Kpava_8p4LxOmhuqEYGGiJ5yJqbHc81F8FjLMEOw/s1600/131243997_11n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Hikers from Korea and abroad are gathered at the entrance of the trail, wearing Olle-themed green and sky-blue scarves decorated with silly-but-cute badges and charms. We are invited to hike the route No. 6, a 14 km course which cuts through downtown Seogwipo and leads past Cheonjiyeon Falls, and finishes at Oedolgae rock.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">As Lonely Planet founder Tony Wheeler, who visited Jeju for the event, said earlier, one of the joys of walking is meeting people. It’s easy to spot locals mingling with groups of tourists, sharing Jeju tangerines and rice wine as they take breaks from walking.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Throughout the course, we run into a series of food vendors and artistic performances prepared by the locals. There is raw fish, roasted rice balls, and rice cakes complimented by Jeju’s tangerine sauce. Almost everyone uses their own chopsticks, which they were told to bring. The idea was introduced by Jeju Olle Foundation, who wanted to make the festival an environmentally-friendly event by reducing the use of disposable products.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhY3BSlmuIoTez9vKDs-MvHFd98nMRmvHDKmQjRzV9IZwTF5W-FRa3Ac22uY0RrBV9_qWuojGRzxbgjlQ0DxKl73RW3ssO17d-vmOS4-8NSvsNXA6DzzOD1U8RywkmGUMZ4sAzFWdsOLeQ/s1600/20111111000788_0.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="243" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhY3BSlmuIoTez9vKDs-MvHFd98nMRmvHDKmQjRzV9IZwTF5W-FRa3Ac22uY0RrBV9_qWuojGRzxbgjlQ0DxKl73RW3ssO17d-vmOS4-8NSvsNXA6DzzOD1U8RywkmGUMZ4sAzFWdsOLeQ/s400/20111111000788_0.jpg" width="400" /></a> </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">When we reach Jjigioreum, a group of local musicians are playing “Oh My Darling, Clementine,” on wind instruments. Everyone enjoys the familiar music, with a tangerine or two in their hands, taking their time before heading to the next step.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">“I’ve never thought of coming to Jeju when I first arrived a week ago,” says Jean Walsh, a tourist from the U.S., who spontaneously made her visit to Jeju two days ago. “I walked the trails alone yesterday, and I’m walking with a lot of strangers today. Both have been fun so far, making you appreciate the scenery in different ways.”</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Jeju Olle trails have a total of 12 routes along the south coast of Jeju. For more information about the trails, visit www.jejuolle.org or call (064) 762-2190.</div><br />

In the past, the island used to be the most common honeymoon destination for newly-weds here before they started going abroad.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Jeju Island, with its subtropical climate and warm seawater, along with its flora, marine fauna and living culture, makes itself an exotic holiday spot for mainlanders. Many of the island’s natural assets have also been designated as a World Natural Heritage site over the past few years, helping to draw many Chinese and other foreign tourists.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Besides its pristine nature, unique cuisine based on a variety of sea foods and exotic culture, now there is one more reason for both Koreans and non-Koreans to visit Jeju Island, that is, to walk on the ``Olle’’ trails built along its coasts.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Under the theme of ``Discover Love on the Trail,’’ the island will hold the 2011 Jeju Olle Walking Festival on trail route No. 6 to 9 from Nov. 9 to 12.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEbVzBwhLBlKgLFY5n3oGp9vex6BDaUdssZdVeiK1s5SllEQ3eRkE3JR6fHruWpbR1eIm7dXu9yu7ttZ2jQeFcFK8RwS9eyUfJXfL-KaWaLjdao-L2Wc1QlKTIi_mJw6f0pdv5HxDCy1M/s1600/dgdzsfb.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEbVzBwhLBlKgLFY5n3oGp9vex6BDaUdssZdVeiK1s5SllEQ3eRkE3JR6fHruWpbR1eIm7dXu9yu7ttZ2jQeFcFK8RwS9eyUfJXfL-KaWaLjdao-L2Wc1QlKTIi_mJw6f0pdv5HxDCy1M/s1600/dgdzsfb.jpg" /> </a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Olle trails first opened in September 2007 and there are now a total of 23 trekking courses spanning 376 kilometers. Olle comes from the old Jeju dialect, which implies a narrow alley or path from a main street to a gate of a house.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">This year’s festival will cover four trail routes built along the island’ southern coast. While walking on the trails extending 50 kilometers for four days, festival participants can view more than 40 musical and other cultural performances. A range of programs organized by villages will take place along the trails.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">``The festival has and will be organized for people from across the globe who would like to walk on the most beautiful and peaceful hiking trails in the world. Since our first route opened in 2007, nearly 1 million Korean and foreign tourists have taken advantage of this unique and healthy way of leisure,’’ said Suh Myung-sook, CEO of the Jeju Olle Foundation.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Suh expects more foreign travelers will take part in this year’s event, stressing olle trails will become Jeju’s main tourist attraction for non-Koreans.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">``During the four-day festivity, various events will be staged at different sites along the trails. From simple events prepared by the village residents along the trekking courses to the delicious local dishes and performances of participating artists will all promote an enjoyable mood,’’ the CEO said.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Participants are required to bring their own utensils and cups to buy food and beverages on the trails as part of organizers’ efforts to help protect the environment. Otherwise, they will have to spend extra money for disposal utensils. Olle trekkers will also have to take shuttle buses to the trails from the major hotels and other main destinations throughout the island.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Visitors from the other side of the world have been arriving at our shores and tramping our tracks as part of the nine-day event that ends on Sunday.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Organiser Jenness Reeve says last year's festival mostly attracted day trippers. But some enthusiasts are staying for a week this year and going on five or six walks which can last from an hour to two days at varying levels of fitness.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

</a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">"We have people who registered from Hawaii, the United States, Canada, Germany, England, Scotland, Portugal and other parts of New Zealand. And people haven't been put off by the weather forecast. We've had northerlies, nor' easterlies, nor' westerlies and rain predicted all week but hardy walkers often walk in the rain."</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Daily "prescription walks" are also part of the menu, with doctors doing their bit to encourage patients that exercise can contribute to a healthy lifestyle, Mrs Reeve says. And kids haven't been left out either. They found a magical world of fairies, butterflies and flowers on the Rainbow Story Walk at a secret lake.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6HXhEpbZFqTmAQ5yIiUGol0ApMK6pkwXf2adeZK9kFj8V75S3GY5hR7gDCkESzaQu1RCoV9NljtdMt9o1pWP2RVd4Zz5hhXIAtnp0tJxVVcvkh3EZMMUYoKyOG6rOjMgEokR8jupZAM4/s1600/4234.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="73" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6HXhEpbZFqTmAQ5yIiUGol0ApMK6pkwXf2adeZK9kFj8V75S3GY5hR7gDCkESzaQu1RCoV9NljtdMt9o1pWP2RVd4Zz5hhXIAtnp0tJxVVcvkh3EZMMUYoKyOG6rOjMgEokR8jupZAM4/s640/4234.jpg" width="640" /></a> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Professional storyteller Tanya Batt sprang out of the bush with riddles to solve. Correct answers earned children ribbons as they followed the track around the lake to collect the colours of the rainbow. Participants then tied their ribbons on to a rope and pulled the Lady of Spring to shore where she handed out fresh flowers.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">More than 85 trampers are expected to do the Walk to the Top of the World which concludes the festival. "Nearly every walk so far has been booked out, but everyone is invited to Promenade the Esplanade to raise funds for St John on Sunday," Mrs Reeve says. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
