Nire Valley Walking Festival

NIRE VALLEY  WALKING FESTIVAL

Friday 7th October
Walking Festival Launch 9.00pm
Ballymacarbry Community Centre Cheese & wine reception, traditional music and song & meet the guides. This will include a talk on the locality from a historical & geographical point of view as well as advise on the programme of walks.

Saturday 8th October 2011
Dinner will be available, for anyone wishing to avail of it, in The Community Centre, Ballymacarbry on the Saturday night. This consists of a 3-course hot meal and advance bookings are definitely necessary. This is a great way to relax with your fellow walkers and recap on the day's walks.
A Walk - 20kms / 7 hours - For the very fit only
Walk of the Lakes Loop
Starting at the Nire Cark Park Carrigeen this walk will head towards Coum Dualla 636mts. It then turns South and descends to the Gap before ascending Carrignagower 767mts, walking around the top of the Coum Iarthars (Boolas) and descending slightly towards Crotty’s Loch. Next it will cross the Uisce Solas and head for the back of Coumshingaun, continuing on to the highest point of the Comeraghs, Fauscoum 792mts. From here it will head North and hit the back of the Sgilloge Lochs, continuing on to the Coumalochas and Coumfea where it will descend to the Nire Car Park.

B+ Walk - 14kms / 6 hours - For the very fit only
Coumtay Loop
Starting at the Nire Cark Park Carrigeen this walk will head towards Coumfea and scale the shoulder to overlook the loch. It then continues on to the top of Coumtay, crossing the Comeragh Plateau to the top of the Mahon Falls. At this point it will head North and meet the Sheanbheanaphiobaire Waterfall at the top of the Sgilloge Lochs from where it will start descending back to the Nire Car Park.

B Walk - 13kms / 5 hours - Good level of fitness required
Loch Mohra/CoumDualla Loop
Starting at the Nire Hall this walk will head down Whelan’s Lane and cross the footbridge into Knocknaree. It will follow the Glenanore Stream up towards the old village of Glenanore and ascend the hill of Knocknaree to the blanket bog of Moanyarha. From here it will ascend to Shauneenabreaga and cross the ridge to Knockanaffrin Peak 756mts, taking in views of Loch Mohra and continuing along the ridge to Coum Dualla. It will then descend to Glenanore Village where it will continue by the stream back to the Nire Hall.

C Walk - 7kms/3-4 hours - Moderate level of fitness required
Sgilloges Loop
Starting at the Nire Car Park at Carrigeen this walk will cross the Nire River and head for the Sgilloge Lochs. After resting for a while and sampling the beauty of the Seanbheanaphiobaire Waterfall it will continue on to Coumlara and the Gap, from where it will return to the Nire Car Park.

B Walk 12kms / 5 hours Good level of fitness required
Cnoc-an-Affrin Loop
Starting at the Nire Cark Park Carrigeen this walk will head towards the Gap and ascend the ridge towards Coum Dualla. It will continue on to Cnoc-an-Aifrinn taking in fantastic views over much of East Waterford, South Kilkenny and South Tipperary. This is the highest point of the walk before it starts descending towards Knocksheegowna and Shauneenabreaga, into Moanyarha Peat Bob and back to the Nire Hall via the old village of Glenanore.

B Walk 12kms / 5 hours Good level of fitness required
Coumalochas/Sgilloges Loop
Starting from the Nire Car Park at Carrigeen this walk will head out the hills over the trailerbridge and track one of the main sources of the Nire River into the Coumalochas. It will then head east around the base of Curraghduff and visit both Sgilloge lochs, continue on to Coumlara crossing the Nire stream again and meet the Gap. From here it will return to the Nire Car Park.

C Walk 4 1/2 hours Moderate level of fitness required
Knockavannia/Kilkeaney
This traditional relaxing walk is almost as old as the festival itself. Starting from the Community Centre in Ballymacarbry it picks up the woodlands trail near Ballymacarbry Bridge and heads out towards the Nire. It continues into Turraphucca Woods and crosses into Knockaun up Halpins Boithrin. From here it heads to the old village of Knockavannia and finishes at the Oratory in Kilkeanny from where bus transport will take you back to Ballymacarbry.
Registration Time: 10.00 - 10.30am at Ballymacarbry Community Centre, Ballymacarbry Village.
 
Family Walk 3-4 hours
Turraphucca Trail Loop
This woodlands loop starts from the council depot on the Nire Road and crosses the Nire River by Fenton's Bridge into Turraphucca Woods. It follows the track up by the Glendaloughlin Stream, continuing on to Knockalisheen where after a small section on road it re-enters the Turraphucca woods again and finishes back at the council depot.
