Britain’s Biggest Walking Festival Starts Xmas Eve - Festival of Winter Walks

The Ramblers Festival of Winter Walks - 24 December 2011 - 2 January 2012

The Ramblers is Britain's walking charity, working to safeguard the footpaths, the countryside and other places we go walking, and to encourage more people to take up walking. With 119,000 members in England, Scotland and Wales, they've been working for walkers for 76 years.

They work for a walking Britain, where walking is a popular choice for its people, both for relaxation and in daily life. The Ramblers want walking to be an enjoyable experience for all, whether in the countryside or in the city, on gentle paths or challenging hillsides and believe that walking contributes to health and well-being and supports a more sustainable way of life.
New rights of access to the countryside are the results of a long-fought campaign by the Ramblers. They are also working hard to keep the footpath network clear and improve its attractions to walkers.

Working to secure new national parks, protect wild land, promote public transport and encourage environmentally friendly farming and sustainable development.

For the first time ever, the Ramblers hugely popular Festival of Winter Walks starts on Christmas Eve; giving you 10 whole days of free, festive, fun-filled walking adventures.

Whether you fancy a short Boxing Day amble to spend some quality time with the family or a lengthy New Year's Day hike to kick start those New Year's resolutions - with over 800 walks taking place across the length and breadth of the country there’s sure to be a walk that's right for you.

Kate Humble steps out to support Monmouthshire walking festival

MONMOUTHSHIRE Walking Festival will launch next week, with support from Spring Watch presenter and Wye Valley resident Kate Humble.

Walkers will be able to choose from 30 different routes during the 10 day festival, which runs from October 21 to 31, and aims to showcase the best of walking in Monmouthshire.
Organisers have put on routes varying in length and difficulty, and walks have been devised in conjunction with local historical societies, conservation groups, and astronomers.

Routes on offer include a five mile guided tour of Mounton Brook and its mills near Chepstow on October 25, and a seven mile walk on October 23 looking at the life of Lady Llanover by walking through Llanover Church and Llanover Park to the edge of the Llanover Estate.
There is also an eight mile walk from Abergavenny castle on October 23 to the abandoned village of Y Graig.

There are several events suitable for children, including a night walk with astronomers at the top of the Blorenge and visit to the Astronomical Society's planetarium at Llanfoist Village Hall on October 22.

The festival is being supported by wildlife presenter Kate Humble. She said: «There are numerous guided walks for every level of walker, so lace up your walking boots and come and experience all the wonderful variety and diversity Monmouthshire has to offer. Then you can have the pleasure of introducing your friends to one of the most beautiful places in the world.»

Walks will be ticketed to ensure the numbers for each group remain small.

Hay-on-Wye launches first ever walking festival

HUNDREDS of people will lace up their walking boots and head out into the countryside for Hay-on-Wye’s first ever walking festival.

Walkers will be in and around the town from tomorrow (Friday) until Sunday for the 30 guided walks, from athletic outings across the Brecon Beacons to gentle strolls.

It will start at 7.30pm tomorrow with a special event at the Swan Hotel featuring broadcaster Trevor Fishlock and polar explorer Felicity Aston.
Ms Aston has led a number of all female expeditions to the Antarctic, Greenland and the Canadian Arctic.

The festival has been organised by Hay Tourism Group to celebrate the diversity of walking opportunities in the area, with one or two literary references along the way. Tickets are £6 each.
Proceeds will be split between the chosen charities Water Aid and Longtown Mountain Rescue.

Walking festival launched in Wales, in the UK’s only coastal national park destination - Bluestone Walking Festival

A new walking festival is to be launched in May to attract visitors to Wales’ Pembrokeshire coast, the UK’s only coastal national park, as part of an initiative by the five-star Bluestone National Park Resort.

The Bluestone Walking Festival will take place between Sunday, 2 May until Thursday 27 May, in association with the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, allowing guests to take in the stunning scenery and beauty of the Pembrokeshire coast and countryside while enjoying the luxury of the Bluestone Resort itself.

The inaugural festival is part of a new package launched by Bluestone that will involve mid-week and weekend walks compiled by the National Park Authority and conducted by trained, qualified and knowledgeable leaders.

“The Pembrokeshire coast was voted the second best coastal destination in the world last year and generations of visitors have enjoyed the spectacular scenery, ancient woodlands, wildlife havens and golden beaches,” said Yvonne Buckingham, Head of Marketing at Bluestone.

“Combining the stunning landscape and walking opportunities with Bluestone and the expertise of walk leaders from the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority will provide a unique opportunity for visitors to see and learn much more about the area while enjoying five-star short-break accommodation.”

Walkers visiting the Welsh National Park will be able to end their walking day being pampered at The Well holistic spa at Bluestone, enjoy a meal at the Carreg Las restaurant before dreaming about their day in one of the luxurious lodges set in spectacular countryside.

The Bluestone Walking Festival costs from £98 per person (based on four people sharing a Caldey Lodge at Bluestone) and will include transport to the start and end of each walking route, led by a trained and knowledgeable leader. Guests can also bring friends, partners or family who might not want to walk but instead enjoy the relaxing or exhilarating activities on hand at Bluestone, including the Steep Ravine and Blue Lagoon water park.

Bluestone also offers a range of other guided walking breaks throughout the year that take in the coastal and countryside areas of Pembrokeshire.

Bookings can be made by calling 01834 862400.
