Call for walking interest - Newton Stewart Walking Festival

A Call has gone out to the people of Galloway to get involved with the region’s largest walking festival at its upcoming AGM.

Newton Stewart Walking Festival Committee is holding its Annual General Meeting on Thursday 25th August at 7.30pm in Newton Stewart Library.

Everyone is welcome to attend to find out more about the organisation’s activities and perhaps get involved in helping to organise next year’s festival and developing Newton Stewart as a ‘Walkers are Welcome town’.

Joan Mitchell, chair of Newton Stewart Walking Festival Committee said: “2012 marks the 10th anniversary of Newton Stewart Walking Festival. From a small weekend event with a few walks the festival has developed into a week long programme of guided walks and evening events. Plans are already being developed for next year’s festival, which will run from Friday 11th to Thursday 17th May.

“We’re hoping to welcome back many of those who have enjoyed the festival over the past decade as well as new visitors to the area.”

For the first time this year festival organisers are also offering guided walks at other times of year. The first of these, a farm walk near Carsluith, took place this week with a second, a challenging route into the heartland of the Galloway Hills including the peaks of Merrick and Mullwharchar being held on Saturday 10th September. Booking essential by e-mailing bookings@newtonstewartwalkfest.co.uk.

Joan added: “If you’re interested in walking and in promoting our area please come along and give us your input. Anyone with an interest can also keep up to date with WalkFest 2012 by signing up for a free electronic newsletter on the festival website.
