SOME of the most beautiful expanses West Kerry has to offer are set to be discovered this weekend as walking enthusiasts beat a path to Castlegregory to enjoy the village's inaugural walking festival
The festival, which takes place this Friday and Saturday, has been organised by the Dingle Hillwalking Club in association with Castlegregory Community Council and the local committee are keen to invite walkers of all abilities to join them.
A programme incorporating six graded walks has been devised with three walks offered on each day of the festival, from easy, to moderate, to difficult.
Guided by experienced members of the Dingle Hillwalking Club, something for everyone is on offer with walks on Mount Brandon as well as the lesser known, but equally spectacular, Caherconree and Baurtregaum. The moderate options include the ridge overlooking Annascaul Lake as well as Strickeen and the Coumanare Lakes.
On Saturday, ecologist Caroline Hurley will take walkers downhill from Glanteenassig to Castlegregory to explore local flora and fauna while on Sunday, archaeologist and environmentalist Mícheál Ó Coiléain will lead a group into the valley of Loch an Dúin. And of course there will be plenty of craic to be had in the pubs of Castlegregory afterwards!
"We look forward to welcoming locals and visitors alike to the inaugural Castlegregory Walking Festival," said festival PRO David Chippendale. "This is a great opportunity to explore the hills and enjoy the company of fellow walkers."
