THE organisers of an annual festival celebrating the Yorkshire Dales and the best in new writing say the fine weather has attracted record crowds.
The seventh Richmond Walking and Book Festival, which started last Friday, has so far seen events featuring poet Pam Ayres and leading climber Adele Pennington bring in large audiences from around the region.
There have also been a number of guided walks around the town and across the surrounding dales.
The festival, which is sponsored by Richmond bootmaker Alt-berg, comes to an end on Monday and features a stellar line up for the remaining events, including an evening with Baroness Shirley Williams and crime writer Peter Robinson, who will talk about their Life in Books at Richmond School tomorrow at 7.30pm.
Folk legend Robin Williamson, founder of the Incredible String Band, will also appear at the Kings Head on Saturday, with a collection of songs and stories accompanied by Celtic harp and guitar.
Festival organiser Colin Grant said: «With having such poor weather through the summer, our walkers, both on the town walks and in the Dales are so lucky to be enjoying a spell of really good late summer weather. The festival has attracted some capacity audiences this year and we are indebted to our main sponsor Alt-berg for their outstanding support of the event.»
