Corby Festival Walking Group is appealing for someone to step into the shoes of Mel Jarvis, creator of the three-day event. Mr Jarvis is standing down as the main organiser of the festival due to other commitments.
The person who takes up the voluntary role from him must have excellent communication skills, as well as a knowledge of the benefits of walking. Access to a computer and email and internet facilities is also essential.
Corby Council’s rural pride officer and a member of the festival working group, Suzanne Preston, said: «If the festival is to become a well-recognised, high profile event, we need an individual or individuals who are just as enthusiastic and passionate about walking as Mel was and who can help develop links with other organisations and local businesses.»
«We will certainly miss Mel’s drive and commitment but I’m sure there is someone out there who will be able to do a tremendous job in putting Corby Walking Festival on the map. The champion would be well-supported by the working group and asked to sit on the planning meetings which are held every four to six weeks. This is a great opportunity to help raise the profile of Corby as a town that welcomes walkers both locally and nationally.»
Hundreds of walkers took part in the festival in May which offered 22 walks for people of all abilities over three days. The biggest challenge was a 35-mile trek covering all the parishes surrounding Corby, split into two walks over two days.
Corby Council’s lead member for community Cllr John McGhee said: «I’m sure the walking group will find the perfect candidate to become the next public face of the festival, who will help promote the value of walking in Corby.»
Anyone interested in becoming a local champion for walking can contact Suzanne Preston for more details on 01536 463177 or email her at suzanne.preston@corby.gov.uk.
