A group of people and their assistance dogs will be among those taking part in this year’s Waendel Walk.
Members of the Northamptonshire Supporters Group Dfd, a group which raises cash for, and awareness of, the charity Dogs for the Disabled, will take on the walk this weekend, alongside thousands of others.
Members of the county group have four assistance dogs and two puppies between them and the charity Dogs for the Disabled provides more than 400 assistance dogs to adults and children with physical disabilities.
Kay Duncan will do the walk with her assistance dog Jasper while fellow group members Julie Basso and Luke Somerville will take part with their assistance dogs Cassie and Jaffy.
The trio will take part in a 5km walk on Saturday along with other group and family members. Over the weekend a total of 17 representatives of the group will take part in various events, including the various walks, with two also cycling 26km over the three days.
Mrs Duncan, of Edinburgh Road, Wellingborough, suffers with problems including severe fybromyalgia.
She has had her dog Jasper for almost 10 years.
Mrs Duncan said: «What spurred me on to do the walk this year was it’s Jasper’s retirement next year so it’s the last year we can do it as a partnership – but it won’t be the last time I will do the walk hopefully.»
«I haven’t taken part in the walk before – this is the first time, even though I’ve lived in Wellingborough for 22 years. But I know all about the Waendel Walk and how big an event it is.
It’s something I’ve always wanted to do but because my illness took such a lump out of my life I haven’t been in a position to do it before.»
