THE Lincolnshire Wolds Walking Festival begins this Saturday, offering 16 days and 80 walks in the Lincolnshire countryside.
Most of the walks are free of charge and ramblers can just turn up at the start point.
Stuart Parker, secretary of the Lincolnshire Ramblers Association, said: «The Lincolnshire Wolds Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty is on our doorstep and we want people to enjoy it. We urge people to pick up a booklet of the walks and join us.»
The event runs from this Saturday to Sunday, June 5. It will be launched on Saturday, from 10.30am to 4pm, at Brackenborough Hall Coach House Holidays, in Louth, when a fun day takes place for all the family.
Sunday features a circular ten-mile walk, meeting at the Ramblers Car Park Nettleton at 10.30am. It will take in stretches of the Viking Way.
On the same day, a two-and-a-half-mile walk starts at Binbrook Village Hall at 11am.
A three-mile walk from Caistor's new Heritage Centre, in Plough Hill, takes place on Monday evening starting at 6.30pm, walking along the Viking Way via Nettleton's Salutation Inn.
Next Tuesday, a walk from Walesby Village Hall takes in the Ramblers Church. This starts at 6.30pm.
Appropriately, to mark the festival the "Walkers Are Welcome" status has been launched in Market Rasen.
The town has become the first in Lincolnshire to take on the status – the move to which has been promoted by Deputy Town Mayor Mike Eckersley.
Nigel Botting, a member of the Walkers Are Welcome national committee, said: «This is a terrific initiative. We have found it has led to a noticeable rise in the number of boots walking in the High Streets of towns involved, this leads to more business for traders. Walkers Are Welcome was launched four years ago and Market Rasen is now the 64th town involved nationally in the scheme.»
Mr Eckersley told the large group of walkers that launched the new status in the Market Place before setting off to ramble in the Wolds: «This is all about enjoying walking and we are grateful to everyone on the steering group for setting the new status up.»
Town Mayor Brian Richardson said: «This is the last event in my Mayoral Year and a prestigious one, in that Market Rasen is the first town in Lincolnshire to get this status. Walking brings people into the Wolds countryside for all the right reasons.»
Following the launch, walkers set out on four different walks in the Wolds with MP Edward Leigh among the walkers to give his blessing to the project.
Mr Parker expressed his delight at the link between the status and the two-week Wolds Walking Festival before setting off.
