Plans steam ahead for Pickering's annual walking festival

PLANS are underway to hold a second boots and steam walking festival next month.

Organised by the Pickering Walkers are Welcome group, the event centres on participants using the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to get to and from walks.

Sam Borman, group chairman, said the festival had been organised following the success of last year’s event with support and sponsorship from the railway.
«We’re really excited to be working with the North Yorkshire Moors Railway for this walking festival,» he said.« As a Walkers are Welcome town, Pickering has so much to offer walkers and we want lots of people to come and enjoy the breathtaking countryside on our doorstep.»

The festival begins on Friday, April 8, with a town walk, a circular walk from Pickering and an evening walk where people can discover the countryside’s secrets at night.
On Saturday and Sunday, there will be a variety of linear and circular walks, two with rangers from North Yorkshire County Council and the North York Moors National Park. There will also be the chance to take the traditional circular route of the Farndale daffodil trail.

«We’ve planned a wonderful programme of 14 walks, safely guided by our volunteer leaders,» Mr Borman said. «With walks ranging from a mile and a half stroll round Pickering with a knowledgeable guide from our local Civic Society, to a challenging 15-mile walk across the moors from Goathland to Pickering, we are sure there will be something to interest everyone.»

As well as the weekend of walks, the group is holding an evening of acoustic entertainment with local singers and musicians on Saturday, April 9.
The evening, which starts at 7.30pm, will be held at Pickering Memorial Hall and hosted by David Swann from Ryedale Live!. Funds raised will be donated to St Catherine’s Hospice. There will also be an opportunity to find out more about Pickering Walkers are Welcome.
