LANGHOLM’S British Lion and Scottish rugby internationalist Billy Steele will open the town’s tenth walking festival next week.
And on Friday, June 3, walkers and others are invited to spend an evening with hiker, broadcaster and writer Jimmie Macgregor who will talk about his life.
The three-day event, from Friday, is run by volunteers with routes around Eskdale and the town based on the local Langholm Walks booklet.
A spokesperson for the walk organisers said: «Experienced walk leaders will explain and point out the interesting historical sites, wildlife, wild flowers and birds. The valleys of the Esk, Ewes, Wauchope, and Tarras will be extensively explored – they contain many lovely corners that can only be reached on foot. Delicious teas are served after each walk, except the evening walk on Friday.»
The Saturday strenuous walks are based in Westerkirk this year and will give a good test to the walker’s ability, the organisers said. The spokesperson went on: «Visitors are coming from all over the United Kingdom as well as more locally. They can all expect a friendly welcome and great hospitality in the ‘Muckle Toon’!»
A buffet and informal musical entertainment will take place at the Masonic Social Club on the Saturday.
The organisers, Langholm Walks are part of the Langholm Access for All Group which is a sub-group of The Langholm Initiative.
The festival opening will be held in The Buccleuch Centre at 1.30pm next Friday and farmers, land managers, public and private agencies, accommodation providers, shopkeepers will be welcome, as well as walkers.
