Rotorua's St Patrick's Day Green Walk

Walkers adorned in green celebrated St Patrick's Day by visiting the cultural sights of Rotorua.

More than 30 people took part in the Green Walk yesterday as part of the Rotorua Walking Festival and Ireland's national holiday.

Rotorua Newcomers Network co-ordinator Susana So said the walk was an opportunity for locals, visitors and newcomers to discover the cultural sights of the city.
"We also wanted to do something for St Patrick's Day, usually celebrations are associated with a lot of drinking so we wanted to offer a healthier alternative and encourage people to walk," Miss So said.

Carrying a microphone, Rotorua Museum of Arts and History programme co-ordinator Ann Somerville led the group to 20 landmarks and spoke of their historical significance.

"The Cultural Heritage Trail is a good way to promote the various attractions such as The Rotorua Arts Village, Te Runanga Tea House and the museum," Miss So said.
"It was great weather and everyone got involved by wearing green and holding Irish flags.

The event was organised by the Rotorua Multicultural Council and involved volunteers from the Rotorua District Council and Events and Venue Rotorua.
Green cupcakes, green tea and cordial was handed out to the participants at the end of the hour-long walk.
