Over 1,000 people took part in the 2011 Get Doncaster Walking Festival making it the most successful year yet.
Walkers of all ages and abilities donned sturdy footwear and waterproofs to stroll through the many wonderful and varied locations of Doncaster.
In all, 27 walks were organised this year as part of the festival, the last event taking place on Sunday with 57 walkers taking in the scenic setting of Cusworth Park.
The festival ran as part of a joint project between NHS Doncaster and Doncaster Council. Walks were led by people from Doncaster Council, the Forestry Commission, Doncaster Ramblers, Living Streets and Doncaster Rovers.
With a total increase of 35 per cent on last year’s attendances, the festival has been hailed a great success.
Gavin Baldwin, the council’s assistant director of adults and communities, said: «This year we have involved more residents than ever before. It has been fantastic to see so many people enjoying the benefits of the various walking events, getting out and about in the fresh air and enjoying the sociable side of walking.»
«The walks were launched in the first weekend in January, a time when people are making New Year resolutions to be more active and to live healthier lives. I hope it has spurred them on to keep taking part in walks all year round.»
