Caminhada 1: Thumbs up for Compton

Meet: N.T. car park Harting Down, on B2141 about 1 mile south of South Harting.
Explore the verdant, rolling countryside of the West Sussex/ Hampshire border. Starting at Harting Down we walk west then south, through an area of remote farmland and old houses. Following a lunch stop in the pretty village of Compton, with options to picnic or use the teashop or pub, we return to Harting Down and perhaps an ice cream?

A circular walk that explores the wonderful N.T. woodland of Nymans (and perhaps some areas not before visited) as well as venturing beyond into the Ouse Valley and some remote areas of the High Weald.

Meet: Car park about 1 mile north of Petworth centre on A283 (pay & display but no charge for participants).
A rare opportunity to explore Petworth Park and Gardens with someone who really knows them. Learn more about their creation, maintenance and future plans and witness the diversity of the fauna and flora, and of course the deer herds, at close quarters.

Meet: The Forestry Commission car park at Roosthole on Hammerpond Road, 300 metres north-west
Goldings Lane at Mannings Heath, near Horsham. A pretty and exhilarating walk mixing the woodland, fields and heathland of St Leonard’s Forest.

Meet: Beside ruins alongside river opposite main entrance to Arundel Castle. Park in Mill Road, Arundel or in town car parks.
Enjoy a day by the river, through Arundel Park. Excellent views of the Castle, Cathedral and Hiorne Tower. Maybe finish with a cream tea in the town?

Meet: Midhurst pay & display car park by Tourist Information Centre
A varied and pretty walk through woodland, heathland and open farmland north of Midhurst, returning along the new riverside path beside the delightful River Rother. A chance to explore Midhurst with its history, cafes and pubs after the walk.

A circular walk that explores the pretty and interesting village of Slindon, then gently gains the heights of the Roman Road of Stane Street and the South Downs near Bignor Hill through woodland.

A shoreline and countryside walk of Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), passing through Bosham, Fishbourne, Apuldram, Dell Quay, Birdham and Itchenor. Includes a ferry ride (bring £1.50 to pay ferryman).

Meet: Car park at rear of Onslow Arms, Loxwood on B2133.
An easy and pretty walk that will include a section of the canal side towpath of the Wey & Arun Canal and circle back across farmland and through woodland. Includes a short presentation about the canal’s history and the ambitions of the Wey & Arun Trust and an optional boat trip along a section of the restored canal. End the walk with a drink in the Onslow Arms? (Optional boat trip will cost £4.00 per person.)

A circular walk across open fields with beautiful views south to the South Downs to the RSPB Reserve and Visitor Centre at Pulborough Brooks. An optional guided walk will allow you an opportunity to spot the bird life on the reserve with expert help. Bring your binoculars!
(There will be £2.50 to pay at the Reserve for the services of the RSPB Warden.)

A gently undulating figure of eight walk taking in villages of Thakeham and Warminghurst, with an opportunity to visit the ancient churches. Gentle inclines bring pleasant views. One ancient track may be muddy so please have good footwear.

A circular walk that begins gently across open fields before passing through Storrington and ascending through woodland to the heights of the South Downs at Kithurst Hil. Following a short section of the South Downs Way the walk descends gradually to return to Abingworth across Washington and Heath Commons.
