Step it out at Slieve Bloom Walking Festival

The 17th Annual Slieve Bloom Walking Festival takes place on the May Bank Holiday weekend from April 29 to May 2, 2011. So get your boots on for a weekend of fun and easy outdoor activity in the beautiful Slieve Blooms!

The festival provides a range of 12 hill walks from easy to moderate to challenging at various locations in the Slieve Blooms.

Experienced walk leaders will enhance your walk with information on local historic sites and wildlife. In the evenings we have arranged some great entertainment for you, candlelit dinners followed by traditional Irish music session, a BBQ and the Walkers Hoe Down in Kinnitty Castle.
You too can walk in the footsteps of Fionn Mac Cumhaill where thousands of years of magic and mystery are interwoven across a land as unspoiled as it is rich in archaeology, history, tradition and culture. Why don’t you join us?

Festival Programme
The Slieve Bloom Walking Festival will offer a great deal more than just guided walking. Start off the weekend with a short 2 hour walk through the bluebells in Knockbarron Wood. Meet your new friends in Giltrap pub and later join the traditional music session in the Dungeon Bar Kinnitty Castle.

Registration for the Walking Festival will take place on Saturday morning at Kinnitty Community Centre. There are 5 walks to choose from ranging from Grade A difficult to Grade C easy. The 2 Grade C walks are organised so that you can join the 2 walks together if you are feeling really energetic. After the walks meet up in the Slieve Bloom Bar Kinnitty and relax at the BBQ for just €5.

On Sunday registration takes place in the Community Centre Clonaslee. After the walk, walkers meet at the Swan pub in Clonaslee for chat and refreshments. Later in the evening the Walkers Hoe Down takes place in the Dungeon Bar at Kinnitty Castle. Tickets are €20.00 and must be purchased at walk registration on Saturday or Sunday morning. Registration for all walks for the weekend is €20. Daily rate for the festival is €8. Registration for weekend also includes all walks on Slieve Bloom Walking Programme for the year

Walking fest runs for a week - 53 Degrees North Walking Festival

FOR ANYONE who thought walking was a simple matter of putting one foot in front of the other, the 53 Degrees North Walking Festival is sure to set you straight.

The event, which runs from April 11th to 17th, takes place at the outdoor specialist’s Carrickmines and Blanchardstown stores.
It kicks off on the Monday evening with a Walking Expo in Carrickmines. Running from 6pm to 9.30pm, exhibitors will include walking clubs, walking awareness groups, walking holiday providers and outdoor gear experts.

Among the organisations taking part are Mountaineering Ireland, Dublin Mountains Partnership and Dublin Mountain Rescue.

The “how-to zone” will give practical advice on topics such as boot fitting, pack fitting, navigation and trail running as well as sessions on first aid.
The following day will see talks from tour operator Roland Monsegu of Camino Ways about the Way of St James and about the Alps from Alun Richardson of Mountaineering Ireland.

Wednesday is given over to a session on outdoor photography by professional snapper Torquil Fleming-Boyd followed by, on Thursday, an adventure film night.
A form of armchair adrenaline, this event comprises a 90-minute medley of the best of adventure films from ShAFF (the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival) which promises to leave viewers on a virtual high.

Mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington – who, legend has it, gained his love of peaked places on the Little Sugarloaf in Bray – will be in town to deliver his lecture Everest at 50 on Saturday.

Finally, and to cap it all off, on the last day 24 walks are being organised in the Dublin mountains, based around a variety of themes including local history, navigation, photography and family. All in all, a healthy week’s worth of activity.

Tain Walking Festival kicks off tourism season in The Land of Legends

The beautiful Cooley Peninsula in County Louth are hosting the 4th annual Tain Walking festival on March 4th - 6th which will set off the counties full calendar of events for 2011.

The festival has become a popular early fixture in Ireland's annual walking calendar with the Cooley Peninsula boasting some of the best walking routes in the country. The area's famous Tain Way Marked Way was recently upgraded and four other new looped walks introduced by Louth County Council with National Development Plan grant assistance from Failte Ireland. Although relatively ‘young’, the festival attracts walkers from as far away as England and Holland as well as throughout the Republic and Northern Ireland.

The festival will offer a range of ten walks starting from the various parts of the peninsula including the picturesque village of Carlingford. Selected routes guarantee breathtaking scenery with graded walks to suit various levels of fitness and experience.

One of the highlights will open the festival on the Friday evening with a spectacular night walk to the top of Slieve Foy mountain. While it will be strictly a Grade 1 walk, the hike in the dark will deliver outstanding views of The Cooley Peninsula and Carlingford Lough lit by the night sky. The Tain Way, a national way marked way of 40kms is being offered as a 2 day walk over the Sat & Sunday.

The more adventurous and active may prefer the Grade 1 20 kilometre walk which will cover all the peaks on the Cooley's. Some of the areas newly launched looped walks will also feature in the festival.

Slightly easier options are also presented, with a guided walk of the medieval town of Carlingford and an evening coastal walk which will highlight the archaeological features along the shores of Carlingford Lough, supported by The Loughs Agency. After dark, weary walkers can wind down with some of the excellent weekend entertainment available.

‘‘We enjoy coordinating our events around our heritage and as this is County Louth – ‘Land of Legends’. The Tain Festival completely compliments the ethos of our tourism offering countywide. Louth County Council and local community support is vital to the success of these type of events. The Walkers Welcome, launched earlier in the year by Minister Mary Hanafin, is extremely successful which means the visiting walker will get excellent value for money and be well looked after’. Frances Taylor of Cooley Tourism commented.

All pre registrations will receive a complimentary pack of walking map cards featuring 10 walks in the area (RRP 4.95).
Day tickets for the festival cost just €15 or €25 for the whole weekend, including the coastal walk and just €5 for the Heritage Walking tour. Registration is required for most walks and the closing date to register is March 5th, 2010.

Full details on the walks and registration information can be found by calling 042- 937 3033 or Email: info@carlingford.ie

Tim is a native of Co. Wicklow and has being a professional photographer for most of his working life; he is also a member SWPP “Society of Wedding and Portrait Photography“. Tim’s style of working with his clients is in a relaxed and friendly manner, to help you capture that magical image.
