Four Seasons Autumn walking festival will explore the beauty of Connemara

The latest Four Seasons Walking Festival takes place from Friday October 21 to Sunday October 23.

The festival represents a chance to explore the Connemara landscape with guides providing an insight into the unique cultural/archeological/historic heritage of the area.

The event kicks off on the Friday evening in the Station House Theatre in Clifden at 8pm with an introductory talk hosted by Michael Gibbons, where the rich history and secrets of the Connemara islands and highlands with be shared.

On Saturday October 22, the first walk will explore Inishbofin. Famed for its magnificent scenery, relaxed lifestyle and traditional music, the island has a population of 200, is five miles long by two miles wide with a superb natural harbour, and is only 30 minutes voyage by sea. On the trip walkers will see the best preserved 17th century fort and ancient harbour on Ireland's west coast, and will walk through a bronze-age landscape, complete with 4,000-year-old houses, cooking sites, and ancient walls emerging from the bog. This five hour trek is described as easy to moderate, walking along small roads, open bog, and mountain. Walkers are asked to meet at Cleggan Pier at 11.10am and the ferry will depart at 11.30am.

On Sunday, a walk will take place around Diamond Hill in the Connemara National Park. The hill is one of the finest hikes in the country, with a multitude of route options. It enjoys huge ocean, island, and mountain views. To the west lie the islands of Inishbofin and Shark, and to the north walkers can witness Inishturk, Clare Island, and Achill. The walk starts from the archway at the visitor centre in the Connemara National Park and participants can choose between a moderate hike of three hours and a harder option of five to six hours. Both days require boots with good ankle support, wet gear, water, and energy snacks.

Packages start from €199pps for two nights, and €299pps for three nights, inclusive of breakfast, dinner, packed lunches, and guided walks. Bookings can be made by contacting any of the five participating hotels, the Abbey Glen Castle Hotel on 095 21201, Clifden Station House on 095 21699, Ballynahinch Castle on 095 31006, Lough Inagh Lodge on 095 34706, or the Cashel House Hotel on 095 31001.

Outdoors Boot up for Leenane Mountain Walking Festival

This April will be the fourth year of the Leenane Mountain Walking Festival, which has grown from strength to strength, with over 260 walkers taking part over the weekend in 2010. This year’s festival will take place on the May Bank Holiday weekend, from Friday, April 29 to Sunday, May 1.

The event is a unique combination of mountain and sea, as Leenane is situated on the edge of Killary Harbour and surrounded by mountains in all directions. Participants are given the opportunity to try higher-level walks such as Mweelrea, which they may not get the chance to try if out walking by themselves without a guide.

Don’t worry if you don’t see yourself as an Edmund Hillary though – the festival has something for all levels of walkers. Each day, there will be a choice of at least three walks from ‘Strenuous’ to ‘Low Level’. All the walks are covered by public insurance and are led by qualified and experienced guides, aided by locals with a vast knowledge and store of information about the area. Access is no issue for the weekend, as farmers have granted permission to cross their lands and many of them will join in on the walks.

Transport to and from the various starting and finishing points will be provided as well as tea, coffee and well-earned scones at local establishments at the end of each day. Participants will also get a commemorative T-shirt, so they can literally wear the festival like a badge of honour.

The festival is about more than walking – there’s plenty more on offer too. Local archaeologist Michael Gibbons will give a talk; there’ll be a sailing race into the harbour; and the weekend will be rounded off with a barbecue and céilí, in the Leenane Hotel. New this year is a guided cycle around the Salruck and Renvlye Peninsula, a race night in the local pub, a simulated helicopter rescue by the Irish Coast Guard and a unique herbal and nature walk with GP and experienced herbalist Dr Dilis Clare.

If part of your group are going walking or cycling but you fancy something else, you could take the 15 minute drive over to the Connemara Mussel Festival in Tullycross, which is taking place over the same weekend. There’s no shame in seeking out sustenance – every walker needs fuel!

Croagh Patrick Heritage Trail walking festival

Spring is in the air at last, and many walkers and hikers have started eyeing their boots with renewed interest. Memories of long meanderings through scenic backdrops stir the soul and the itch to walk is reawakened. Walking is a wonderful way to keep fit and see some spectacular scenery while you’re at it.

One of the most beautiful routes to walk in the county – maybe even the country – is the 61k Croagh Patrick Heritage Trail. Extending from the town of Balla in central Mayo to the seaside village of Murrisk at the foot of Croagh Patrick, the trail (an accredited National Way Marked Way) passes through deciduous woodland and across rolling fields and bogs. Walkers pass along bóithríní and ancient pathways as the trail makes its way through a number of picturesque villages, including Killwalla and Aughagower, as they move towards their destination on the shores of Clew Bay. On arrival, those with enough energy (this walk is classed moderate to hard) might be inspired to climb The Reek – but no pressure, an ascent to the summit of Croagh Patrick is not part of the trail!

A three-day walking festival celebrating the trail has been organised for Friday, March 19, to Sunday, March 21. Experienced guides will offer participants insights into the many heritage sites along the way. On each of the three days walkers will be picked up at the finish point and brought back to their accommodation; services and food will be available along the route. Each day, the walkers will cover roughly 20k of the route – Day one covers the ground between Balla and Ballintubber. On the second day, the walkers will head as far as Aughagower, with Murrisk firmly in the sights for the third and last day.

For bookings and registration, contact 094 9366709. For more information, email info@croaghpatrickheritagetrail.com

The Twelve Bens Mountains dominate the view to the north, and to the south lies an assortment of islands, including the famous pilgrimage Island of St. Macdara. Further south still, on a clear day the great holy mountain of Mount Brandon pokes its head above the ocean swells.

St. Feichin founded a monastery here and his Holy Well is still venerated by local fishermen. The complex coastal midden sites are harrowing indications of settlement and erosion. Group bookings only. Easy walking along small roads and open track ways and beaches.

Saturday 17 March
Diamond Hill, Connemara National Park (a dedicated area of bog and mountain wilderness)
Diamond Hill is one of the finest hikes in Ireland with a multitude of route options commanding huge ocean, island and mountain views. It is a outlier of the 12 Bens Mountain range standing 500 meters and towering above the small Quaker village of Letterfrack, which was founded by an English family during the Great Famine (1846-53) to relieve distress. To the west are the islands of Inishbofin and Shark, and to the north Inishturk, Clare Island and Achill (Co Mayo) - once ruled over by the powerful O'Malley clan.
From the summit of Diamond Hill you look down on Kylemore Abbey and Gardens - former home of Mitchell Henry MP, now owned by the Benedictine Nuns and formerly run as a secondary school -, and deep into the Twelve Bens Mountain range and the Maam Turk mountains beyond. On the slopes of the mountain are the remains of an abandoned 19th century Famine settlement, and buried in the surrounding bogs are the remains of a 5,000 year old Megalithic tomb, a Children's Burial Ground and a drowned bronze-age (4,000 years ago) forest. The wild valleys are home to large herd of native red deer and wild mountain goats while its rivers have rich stocks of salmon and trout which are hunted by Connemara's secretive and beautiful otters.

Its fragmented coastline boasts a superb natural harbour, dramatic sea cliffs, beautiful coral beaches, sea caves and its seas teem with fish life which feed the island's large seal colony while the skies of 'Bofin' belong to choughs, corncrakes and falcons.
On this walk trip you will see the best preserved 17th century fort and ancient harbour on Ireland's west coast. You will walk through a bronze-age landscape, complete with 4,000 year old houses, cooking sites and ancient walls emerging from the bog.
