The new "Black Combe Walking Festival" will take place in Millom (Cumbria) in May.

Organiser hopes festival will put area on the map

A TOWN is taking steps to put itself on the map as a serious tourist destination with the announcement of its latest festival.

Black Combe Walking Festival will take place in Millom in May.
The event will be opened by chairman of the Wainwright Society and Copeland resident, Eric Robson, who is best known as host of Gardeners’ Question Time on Radio 4.

The festival is the brainchild of South Copeland tourism officer, Mark Holroyd, who organised the successful Beer ‘n’ Bangers festival in October last year.
The walking festival will run from May 27 to June 5 with a different walk in the region each day, along with talks and slideshows on the routes.

Mr Holroyd said: “Many other towns across the country have successful walking festivals. Ulverston and Barrow are great examples.
“They are a great way to promote the landscapes of an area without taking anything away.

“What will make our festival special is the variety of walks available, from birdwatching trails, mountain hikes, coastal walks and opportunities for the whole family to become involved.
“We are delighted Eric has agreed to open the event, he’s a great ambassador for West Cumbria and perfectly suited to this.
“He’s a popular presenter of Gardeners’ Question Time on Radio 4 so this will give some appeal to visitors from outside the area.

“There are always opportunities for celebs to get involved in our events, Beer ‘n’ Bangers in particular has a lot of scope for that sort of thing.
“People don’t need to walk every day. If you’re free for the week, there are opportunities to enjoy other attractions in the area such as the heritage centre and Muncaster Castle, and enjoy food and drink at venues such as Millstones in Bootle.
“There will be a wide variety of walks, some for those with a bit more energy and others for those who have maybe not done much walking before.”

Meanwhile, the inaugural Western Lake District Kite Festival will take place in Haverigg over two days earlier in May.
