Selkirk Walking Festival back on track for Easter

SELKIRK’s Walking Weekend, which was under threat because of lack of volunteers, will take place over the Easter weekend.

“This is great news,” said organiser Eleanor McCudden after a successful public meeting, organised by the chamber of trade, last week.
The event began nearly a decade ago and has long been considered a tribute to Tom Henderson, the former provost and councillor who had drawn up plans for an annual walking festival when he died while out walking.

However, lack of available volunteers and changes at the chamber resulted in the event being cancelled last year.
This year’s walking weekend will take place over three days, starting on Good Friday.Although start times and leaders are still to be finalised, the following walks have been confirmed.

Friday, April 22 – Drovers Road circular, five miles, incorporating Selkirk’s Royal Mile, including the Prisoner’s Bush and Old Lindean Kirk; Witchyknowe, 10 miles, on Bowhill Estate.

Saturday, April 23 – The Battle of Philiphaugh, five miles; Melrose to Selkirk circular, 11 miles.

Sunday, April 24 – Traquair to Selkirk, via the Three Brethren, 11 miles; Cauldshiels Excursion, 11 miles.

Transport, for which a small charge will be levied, will be available to take participants to starting points.
For further information and to pre-book any of these walks, contact Eleanor McCudden on 07979 283 966.
